The term “gastritis” usually refers to an inflammation of the layer that lines the inside of the stomach, but it is also often used to define a series of symptoms resulting from this inflammation, in addition to heartburn or discomfort.
In the last decade, scientists have shown that the main cause of most cases of gastritis is infection by a bacterium called Heliobacter pylori.
Gastritis should not be confused with the common symptoms of upper abdominal discomfort. It has been associated with ulcers, especially peptic ulcers, and in some cases, chronic gastritis can lead to more serious complications.
