Summer season has started and hot air and hot sun is waiting outside. Usually people focus on protecting their skin in summer from sunburn but they forget one of the most important parts of our body – our eyes.
Eyes are more prone to infection or allergies in summer as they face hot air and more UV rays. Just wearing any sunglasses to avoid heat is not enough. Eyes require proper protection and care during summer.
Effects of Harmful Ultra Violate Rays (UV)
The UV rays from sun are divided into three category based on their heat intensity.
UV-C rays are most harmful rays for human body (and for plants/tree too). Environmental OZONE layer blocks almost all UV-C rays and saves us from it.
Ozone layer is not able to completely block the UV-A & UV-B. It reaches to earth and if we spent more time under sun then these rays can cause sunburn to skin and Eyes too. Usually bad effect of these rays on our eyes is a long term process and we usually feel it at an older age when it is almost irreversible to cure it completely.
So we should start taking care of our eyes from early teen age so that in the older age we will not face any eye related issue.
Summer Eye Care Tips
Having sunglasses is not just a fashion symbol only. In order to protect your eyes from harmful UV-A & UV-B rays you should wear UV protected sunglasses. Make sure your glasses provide proper UV protection and this is not necessary that UV Protected glasses are costly.
Make sure to wear sunglasses even if you’re in the shade. Even though shades reduce UV and HEV exposure significantly, you’re still exposing your eyes to UV rays reflected off of buildings and other structures.
Avoid dust as much as possible by closing windows and keeping surfaces clear with a damp duster.
Wear a Hat
A large sun Hat provides you additional protection from harmful sun rays. Skin around our eyes is very delicate and sensitive; having a hat helps you to protect this sensitive skin and also help you to reduce wrinkles and skin cancer.
Tip: Don’t apply your sunscreen too close to your eyes. It can cause irritation in your eyes.
It is important to keep your eyes hydrated. Drink a minimum of 2 liters of water each day to avoid dehydration from eyes.
Avoid sun at its peak
Try to stay inside especially at noon time 12pm to 4pm. At this time the strength of the sun and UV radiation exposure are at a peak.
Eye Care while Swimming
Summer means it is swimming time. You should wear goggles while swimming it helps to protect your eyes from pool chemicals and any bacteria in the water.
If you wear contact lenses, goggles are must for you while swimming. You must clean your contact lenses with proper cleaning solution after swim to reduce the chances of eye infection.
Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces, so they are great for water based activities.
Tip: –Wash your eyes with fresh water when you step out of the pool. It isn’t just your skin that dries out in summer, but even your eyes.
Rest Your Eyes & Wash Them Properly
In summer eyes have to face heat, dust and UV rays. It suggested that wash your eyes at least twice a day with cold water; it will not only clean your eyes but also help you to keep required moisture in your eyes.
