Pasteurized Dairy Consumption Linked To Bone Fractures (Study)

For decades, nutritionists, doctors, and government nutrition guidelines advised people of all ages to consume a lot of dairies, especially cow’s milk. Their recommended dose is at least 3 glasses of milk per day. The explanation for this urged advice was that milk supports bone health, because it’s a great source of calcium.

However, nowadays, there are significant number of studies that report the opposite. These studies claim that dairy products didn’t offer any bone protection, in fact, they increase the risk of bone fractures, even death.

How is Milk Consumption Related to Bone Fractures?

A report published in 2014 in the British Medical Journal, showed the results of a two studies made on more than 100,000 people. These studies followed the consumption of milk products and followed the participants for amazing 20 years. They came to a conclusion that participants who consumed more than 3 glasses of milk per day had higher risk of death than those who consumed less than 3 glasses of milk.

Consumption of milk was not protective against hip fractures at all, in fact, consumption of more than 3 glasses per day increased the risk of bone fractures. The studies showed that women are more prone than men to this condition.

Two meta-analyses that consisted 6 studies with 195,000 participants, and 6 studies with 39,563 participants confirmed the same finding that consumption of dairy products does not protect against fractures.

Inflammation

Authors of the study published in the British Medical Journal, also measured serum interleukin 6 found in milk products, and the urine 8-iso-PFG2a of participants. They found that consummation of milk was connected with the elevation of both markers. Elevated serum interleukin 6 was a marker of inflammation, while elevated urine PGF2a indicated that the participant was under great oxidative stress.

It was proven that milk sugars (lactose and galactose) induce oxidative stress and inflammation in animal models, and the results are the same when human intakes milk sugars. Unfortunately, 1 glass of milk for adult person is a common dose that is used to accelerate the aging process of a mice.

Chronic inflammation is the main reason for osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis. According to the BMJ study, dairy consumption induces chronic inflammation. Epidemiological studies showed that countries with habit to consume a lot of dairy products have higher risk of heart diseases and osteoporosis than other countries.

Young Children and Milk

Consumption of cow’s milk is not recommended during the first year of the child. Scientist claimed this, because the result in several studies was that milk causes the lining of children’s gut to bleed, and often leads to iron-deficient anemia. Toddlers and infants fed with large amounts of cow’s milk will consume enormous amount of protein and minerals, which must be excreted via the kidneys. This will stress your child and increase the risk of dehydration due the excessive development of urine. Drinking cow’s milk at early stages in life stimulates unnatural and fast growth of toddlers. As we said earlier, one glass of milk accelerates the aging process of mice, so you can imagine what it does to your child.

The accelerated growth can make your child prone to diabetes type 2 and obesity later in life.

Adolescents and Milk

Nobody knows for sure if milk consumption by adolescents is harmful, helpful, or benign. But, a study showed that adolescents who consume large doses of milk products tend to be overweight. Also, it is known that dairy products aggravate acne.

Conclusion

Consumption of pasteurized cow’s milk is definitely going to induce chronic inflammation that will result with heart disease, osteoporosis, and possibly some other chronic disease later in life. Even if nobody knows for sure if the raw milk consumption is good or bad, it has at least reduced inflammatory potential compared to pasteurized milk.
