We are surrounded by various germs that cause diseases. However, have you ever wondered which item in your home has the most germs? No, it is not the toilet seat. In fact, it is not even connected to the following ten items that are a great source of bacteria.
But, do not worry, we also offer some advices on how to clean those items and places and get rid of the bacteria.
The damp and dark reservoirs of the coffee makers offer the perfect conditions for microorganisms to live in. often times they contain mold, coliform bacteria and yeast.
You can clean your coffee maker by adding four cups of vinegar into the reservoir and leave it work for about half an hour. Then, run two or three cycles of water through it until the smell of vinegar vanishes.
One of the germ hotspots in your home are the carpets. Have you known that they can be 4,000 times dirtier than your toilet seat and that they host many different organisms?
You can soak up the fresh stains on your carpet by using soda water or tonic water. These solutions can also work for removing dirt off your carpets. Baking soda is great when it comes to absorbing nasty smells that hide among the fibers of your carpet. A tip – whenever you want to use a new cleaning method or product, test it first on a small area.
A good carpet cleaner can be the powder, whether it is a powdered cleaner or baking soda.
You would just need to sprinkle the powder all over the carpet.
Half an hour later, vacuum the powder.
It would be even better if you do the sprinkling in the evening and leave it overnight. This would give the cleaner enough time to work, to soften the stains and absorb the odors. In the morning, vacuum the powder up.
After every use, wash your cutting board thoroughly. You can either put it in the dishwasher, or wash it well with some hot, soapy water. Researches have shown that the cutting board contains some dangerous bacteria, like coliform bacteria, as well as yeast and mold.
Mold and coliform bacteria are often found on kitchen counters. That is why it is very important to wash well the countertops using a mixture made of diluted bleach and water. Do this every time you prepare some food.
You can clean the stove knobs the best if you remove them and wash them using hot, soapy water, once per week minimum, as stove knobs can be paved with coliform bacteria, yeast and mold.
Pet toys can also have dangerous staph bacteria, coliform bacteria, yeast, mold, etc. make sure your pet’s toys are well cleaned and scrubbed with water, soap, and a mild bleach solution. If your pet also has soft toys, you can wash them in the washing machine.
Faucet handles also can be paved with mold and coliform bacteria, and therefore they should be cleaned on a daily basis with disinfectant wipes or spray.
Dish sponges or rags
It is ironic how the things you use for cleaning actually have the most germs. Namely, the sponges and the dish rags include yeast, mold, coliform bacteria and staph bacteria.
If you want to keep your sponges clean, put them in the microwave every day for two minutes and change them with new ones every two weeks. If you use a rag, you should wash it every two days in a hot washing cycle.
You can keep the pet bowls clean by washing them in the dish washer or if you wash them by hand. If you choose the latter option, use a diluted bleach solution and do not forget to rinse then in the end using clean water. For a gallon of water, use one cup of diluted bleach solution.
Toothbrush holders usually contain a lot of bacteria as they tend to be close to the toilet seat. When you flush the toilet, the aerosols that contain fecal can be let loose.
Clean the toothbrush holders twice a week by using hot soapy water or put them in the dishwasher.
You should clean the bottom and the sides of the kitchen sink at least twice a week to eliminate the mold and the colliform bacteria.
Furthermore, you can make a mixture from one tablespoon of bleach and one quart of water which you will use once a month. This mixture should be poured down the drain. Also, do not forget to wash the sink strainer.
