Until now, we all believed that all potato chips are made from potatoes. However, some types of potato chips are a mixture from wheat, corn, rice, and potato flakes. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, the abovementioned mixture is then cut into shaped leaves similar to real chips, baked in a lot of oil, dried, and in the end sprayed with different powdered flavors.

Moreover, Dr. Mercola warns that after this procedure (baking the chips in high temperatures) a harmful carcinogenic byproduct called acrylamide is created. Furthermore, this is a harmful and potentially neurotoxin compound which is created when foods rich in carbohydrates, such as potato chips and French fries, are baked in high temperatures over 100 degrees Celsius. When the baking is done, the food surface becomes yellowish or brownish, which is actually a sign that acrylamides were created, according to .

Potato chips have an abundance of fat and calories which can increase the risk from weight gain. Around 30 grams of potato chips, which is approximately 15 to 20 potato leaves, contains around 10 grams of fat and 154 calories. A study conducted in 2011, published in the journal The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that everyday consumption of 30 grams of potato chips can lead to around 1 kilogram of weight gain in a period of four years.

According to the scientists, the relation between the potato chips and weight gain is stronger than the relation between weight gain and any other food product, including meat products and sweet drinks. Moreover, surplus kilograms are also associated with increased risk from diabetes, heart diseases, and some carcinogenic forms, as written on .
