Coffee vs Orange Juice – Which Should You Drink in the Morning

It is almost like a tradition for many people that whenever they are feeling sleepy or tired, they drink coffee. It makes sense though since caffeine in coffee is known to stimulate the brain, so you can easily fight drowsiness. However, drinking coffee can be addictive because you will soon crave for its effect. What’s more, the drowsiness comes back with vengeance after just a few hours. This is why there are other alternatives offered, especially those without caffeine. One of the best options today is to drink orange juice.

Coffee vs Orange Juice - Which Should You Drink in the Morning

According to new research, just a glass of orange juice (equivalent to 240ml) can help boost your brain and keep you alert even if it is a sluggish afternoon.

The Study on Orange Juice

Researchers from Reading University in Berkshire has discovered that orange juice is so much better than coffee when it comes to boosting concentration, reaction times, and alertness of a person. They studied 24 men for two days in which they face a series of mental tests:

  1. On the first day, they drank a glass of orange juice before they went through with the mental tests.
  2. On the other day, the young men drank sugary water that tasted and appeared like orange juice.

After these two days, the results were compiled and studied. The researchers found out that the men performed better on the first day where they had the real orange juice. They were much quicker in finishing the exams and they also concentrated more on them. In the European Journal of Nutrition where the study was published, it was also reported that they remained alert for about six more hours after drinking the juice.

Coffee or Orange Juice in the morning? Now you know the answer

How Orange Juice Works

According to research, orange juice is effective in stimulating the brain because instead of caffeine, it has flavonoids, which are a group of plant chemicals that can also improve health. Flavonoids are found in many vegetables and fruits, including berries and citrus fruits like oranges. What these chemicals do is that they improve the blood flow to your brain, while making it easy for information to pass in and out of the brain cells.

Next time you need a boost, don’t reach for that cup of coffee. Instead, have a glass of orange juice to boost your alertness and concentration. The study has confirmed that extra pulp can add to the positive effects, so make sure you have freshly-squeezed juice and not the one in powdered form.
