As a matter of fact, swimming is a good cardio exercise that not only works your entire body but improves your heart and lungs at the same time. You might be thinking that swimming isn’t for you because you’re not that good a swimmer but this isn’t true. Regardless of whether this is your first time to hit the pool or are a pro in doing various strokes, you can use this workout to melt away fats fast.
The American Heart Association discovered that spending 30 to 60 minutes swimming at least 4 to 6 times in a week can help you lose weight and at the same time reduce your risk of heart problems. Compared to biking, running, and other types of cardio workouts, swimming pushes your entire body to workout. A good workout in the pool will engage your core, lower body, back, and upper body.

Before you do the swimming proper, you need to warm up first. Start with 5 minutes worth of aqua aerobics, water jogging or walking, and light stretching.
In the workout proper, your first goal is to do a 200 yard warm up or 8 laps in a pool that is 25 yards long. Do 2 sets of 200 yards of front crawl, side stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, or a combination of any of these strokes.
Follow this up with 2 sets of 100 yards of kicking.You should then perform 2 sets of 50 yard sprints. Your rest in between should be minimal to really get your blood pumping.
Cool down for five minutes to bring your heart rate back to normal. You can do 1 set of 100 yard of various strokes then end it with some light stretches.
What to Watch Out For
Although many have recommended swimming when it comes to losing weight, there are some who complain that they’ve gained weight even when they’re working out in the pool. Based on a study that was conducted by the University of Florida, there are those who gained weight because their appetite was stimulated when they swim. This causes them to eat more afterwards. If you are trying to lose weight and are planning to incorporate swimming in your weight loss regimen, be advised that you might get hungry afterwards. Take the necessary steps to avoid eating too much to the point that you just gained back the number of calories you burned through swimming.
Swimming isn’t just a leisure activity that you do during the summer but one that can help you achieve weight loss in no time. Incorporating this cardio workout with other weight loss exercises can help you reach your goal faster and in a more enjoyable manner as well.
