Getting enough sleep is vital for proper body function. The body has a unique ability to regenerate and self-heal, most of which happens during sleep. Sleep deficiency can lead to a number of health issues, and this happens to your body if you sleep for 5 hours or less.
People who don’t get enough sleep or sleep in very short intervals are more prone to putting on weight, studies confirm. The reason for this is that the brain, which doesn’t get proper rest, signals the body to crave food, i.e. energy for proper function. Hence the constant feeling of hunger when we are chronically underslept. According to research, if you sleep less than what your body needs, the following day you’ll ingest 300 more calories.
As mentioned above, the body ‘resets’ during sleep, which means it replenishes lost energy. For this it takes between 6 and 8 hours. People who sleep 5 hours or less will immediately feel changes in their body function, one of which includes high blood pressure. In time this condition can lead to heart disease.
Your body is a ‘machine’ that requires constant maintenance. If you sleep less, your tired body cannot control the levels of blood sugar, which is a serious risk for the onset of diabetes type 2.
Sleep deprivation can also compromise your immune function making your body more susceptible to viruses and bacteria.
Insufficient sleep almost immediately results in fatigue and bad mood. In the long run, such a lifestyle can lead to depression and a number of mental disorders.
