If you drink 2 sweetened beverages every day, including the “diet” beverages, you can raise the risk of heart attack by about 25%, according to one study provided by the researches that come from the Karolinska Institute located in Sweden and published in the journal “Heart.” Although previous studies have connected the consumption of diet and sugary beverages to different worsened health consequences, including worse health of the heart.
Gavin Sandercock from the University of Essex said that this study was very interesting, and he was not involved in the study. The study shows that there is no difference in the outcome of the drinks that do or don’t contain sugar.
Robust connection discovered
In the research was involved 42,400 men who were from 45 to 79 years when the study began. They were followed for about 12 years. All of these people were asked “How many sweetened juice or soft drinks do you drink every day or week?” That category of sweetened beverages included the “diet” drinks, but didn’t include those fruit juices without sweetener. Also, it excluded tea and coffee, even if one of them was sweetened.
Those men who consumed 2 or more servings of these sweetened drinks in a day, had 23% higher rate of heart disease than those men that consumed less. This connection remained even after they adjusted for potential confounding factors.
Reasons for the connection still unclear
The Spanish researchers Miguel Ruiz-Canela and Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez proposed that the link may be explained by the truth that those people who consumed lots of sweetened drinks also have poorer diets. But they spotted that the sweetened drinks have been connected with some known risk factors for heart disease.
The Telegraph reports that they wrote that the well-known connection between sweetened drinks and Type 2 diabetes or obesity – risk factors for heart attack, supported the biological plausibility of the discoveries. The best message, based on the results, for a preventive strategy should be recommended an irregular consumption of these sweetened drinks or to avoid them completely.
Some other researches advised that the artificial sweeteners might confuse the brain, and that can lead to more snacking. Sandercock said that the adult people that drank 2 sweetened beverages in a day also drank more coffee, ate the least vegetables, ate the most processed meat and they had more heart disease family history.
Some recent research has associated the sweetened drinks, including the “diet” beverages, with an increased risk of obesity, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
One study from 2014 published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine discovered that those people that drank more “diet” soda were more likely to develop strokes and heart attacks. One 2013 study provided by the National Institutes of Health discovered that those people who drank more sweetened drinks were more likely to develop depression. The connection was particularly strong for those diet beverages.
