In Charaka Samhita it says: “The dirt that gathers at the root of the tongue prevents normal breathing and creates bad breath. Therefore it is necessary to cleanse the tongue every day.” Regular tongue cleansing rids it of white deposits, improves the sense of taste, eliminates bad breath, and protects the health of the teeth and mouth cavity. The thin white layer covering our tongue indicates the presence of millions of bacteria. Tongue cleansing is recommended to people who suffer from frequent infections of ear, throat, and nose. The tongue cleanser eliminates the bacteria multiplying on the tongue, thus preventing further infection.
Keeping the tongue clean also normalizes digestion.
Ayurveda considers that the process of digestion starts in the mouth when the saliva is mixed with the food and starts to dissolve it. The tongue cleanser not only cleans but also gently massages the tongue. This is important since according to the traditional Chinese medicine the tongue contains many acupuncture points.
How to use tongue cleanser:
Tongue cleansers may be made of gold, silver, copper, brass, and stainless steel. Even plastic tongue cleansers have appeared recently.
• Stick out the tongue.
• Grab the tongue cleanser by both ends and reach the very root of the tongue with its arched part.
• Scrape the tongue from the back towards the front four or five times.
• Each time wash away the white mucus from the cleanser.
• When you have finished, wash your mouth well.
Repeat the procedure of tongue cleansing every morning after waking up.
